Active Research Projects

Interactive SMP Online

This project seeks to develop online interactive workbooks for the Key Stage 5 mathematics curriculum. These workbooks are based on the long-standing, well-respected School Mathematics Project (SMP) archive, and are being developed through collaboration between teachers, researchers and software developers hosted at The University of Southampton. In 2023, these workbooks will be piloted in local secondary schools, leading to research data that will inform further development and future iterations of the design cycle. We are actively seeking (international) collaborators from schools and industry, and intend for these resources to lead to cost-effective educational opportunities for underserved communities beyond our borders.

Proof comprehension for University mathematics

This project centres on a variety of novel assessment methods for evaluating (and supporting) students’ understanding of mathematical proof. Recent outputs include:

In 2023/24, we are collecting further data with 200+ analysis students based on 8 multiple choices and the summary task. The first outputs from this project will be presented at FAME 2024, and will be published early in 2025.
